Hello everyone,
I thought for today’s post I would give you some tips regarding nice places you can visit while staying in Lisbon and that make lovely day trips.
The idea of writing this post came to me during my last visit to Lisbon and while deciding what to do with my days there, ended up looking at the map and checking:
“Where can I go, about 1 hour away from Lisbon, and that has enough things to see?”
Also, I wanted to select places where you could go without the need for a car; so it’s ideal if you are a tourist!
Shall we get started?
5 places to visit 1h from Lisbon
Óbidos
It is probably stated in any travel guidebook but this village and I go waaay back in time. Let’s say, back to my childhood!
I used to spend some weeks during summer break in the neighborhood of Óbidos, and I have many lovely memories from those times.
How to describe Óbidos?
It’s basically a cozy and cute village within a castle’s walls.
Imagine Westeros but then… nicer! hahaha

How to get to Óbidos?
Get an express bus in Campo Grande, even though it’s not that easy to find the bus stop.
You can find the timetable here.
Single tickets cost less than 8Eur (as far as I remember), per journey, and you can buy them with the bus driver.

Sintra
This one speaks for itself… you know you should visit Sintra whenever you are around Lisbon.
What I also recommend is that you go more than one day, because honestly, you won’t be able to see everything in just one round. And trust me, there is a lot to see!!!
How to describe Sintra?
Sintra is like a fairytale village but you got to be prepared to walk a LOT and up & down & up & down &… you get the point.

How to get to Sintra?
Go to Rossio train station, in Lisbon, and get on the train to Sintra. Easy! LOL
A little tip: get enough money in your Lisboa Viva card a day in advance or go charge it somewhere else; at Rossio station, there will be loooooong lines just to do this!
Otherwise, you can go to Oriente and get on a train there towards Sintra as well. It will be less crowded.

Mafra
Another cute town on the way to Ericeira that it’s totally worth a stop!
I have many memories of this town as I lived there for a couple of months.
Once you’re there, you must visit the Convent and walk around its surroundings. There are tons of cute little shops just across the convent.

How to get to Mafra?
There is an express bus service from Lisboa, again in Campo Grande, which will take about 40min to bring you to Mafra.

Cascais
If you read this blog for a while now, you know how much I like Cascais. Oh, you’re new here? No worries, check out this post – CASCAIS & CABO DA ROCA
Now seriously, haha, Cascais is a great stop regardless of the season. I love the vibe over there!

How to get to Cascais?
The best way I know, without a car, is to catch a train in Cais do Sodré direction… Cascais! LOL

The tickets are quite cheap and you can use your Lisboa Viva card.
Sesimbra
My love for Sesimbra goes beyond the reasonable, I must confess! It is by far my preferred beach destination in Portugal, and even though its famous among us Portuguese to have cold waters, it is also known for its beauty! I simply love it there.
Also, a great day trip even if not in the summertime; one thing is guaranteed: great fresh fish!!
It’s a fishermen town, just like Cascais, but I like this town a bit more.
So many great memories of this place… Totally recommend it!

How to get to Sesimbra?
You can get an express bus, from Lisbon, via TST bus company, departing from Praça de Espanha in Lisbon.
